New Central Control Room

The company

Italcementi Group, now part of Heidelberg, is the fifth largest cement producer in the world, with a production capacity of over 70 million tons of cement per year and a turnover close to 6 billion euros. Its companies operate in 22 countries on 4 continents, through an industrial device of 63 cement plants, 13 grinding centers, 5 terminals, 614 concrete plants and 125 aggregate quarries.

The needs

After a stoppage of more than 6 years, with the increase in demand for cement, the customer decided to restart the factory in Sarche di Calvino (TN). Historically, the cement plant has never had a centralized control room from which to manage the entire process, but it has always had a grinding room and a small kiln room.

The solution

The need for the new control room required first of all the design and construction of a new fiber optic data backbone that would connect the new Central Control Room (CCR) to all the electrical rooms where the PLCs are present.

All communications were moved from Profibus to Ethernet.

The CCR was built according to the Gruppo SET design using a double console that followed the profile of the walls and a videowall with 6 * 55” monitors that form a single totally configurable surface. Gruppo SET, as EPC, has carried out all the works relating to the fiber optic backbone, the transition of communication to Ethernet, the supply of the new CCR and the construction of a new UPS line.

The benefits

  • Centralization of control of the entire plant in one place
  • Centralized engineering station
  • Fast communication between Ethernet-based systems
  • Greater efficiency in operations
